Dupa ce au trecut de la stadiul de "backing vocals" la trupa cu "acte in regula",Eagles si-au lansat primul album la inceputul lunii Mai in 1972,single-urile "Take it easy" si "Witchy Woman" devenind semnatura pentru prima parte a carierei lor si a rock-ului din acea perioada.Cantecul este scris de Jackson Browne si Glenn Frey,initial Browne incepand sa-l scrie cu un an in urma,in '71 pentru propriul album de debut dar cum a avut dificultati la terminarea cantecului si Frey,pe atunci vecin cu el s-a oferit sa-l ajute si,cu cateva mici imbunatatiri a reusit sa-l faca mai bun,acesta i-a spus ca il poate folosi pentru albumul de debut al trupei lui.
Cantecul a ajuns pe locul 12 in Billboard Hot 100 si a stat acolo timp de 11 saptamani,Bud Scoppa,redactor la revista Rolling Stone spunand despre acesta "Simply the best sounding rock single to come out so far this year. The first time through, you could tell it had everything: danceable rhythm, catchy, winding melody, intelligent, affirmative lyrics, a progressively powerful arrangement mixing electric guitar and banjo, and a crisp vocal, with vibrant four-part harmony at just the right moments for maximum dramatic effect."
In al doilea vers gasind referiri la oraul Arizona,in Winslow,Arizona se gaseste o statuie tribut pentru acest cantec si impactul avut la acea vreme,chiar si dupa 41 de ani,"Take it easy" fiind unul dintre cele mai bine cotate cantece Eagles.
